Last year, I was invited to the White House to witness the signing of the Voting Rights Acts Bill. Luminaries of the Civil Rights Movement from Julian Bond to Jessie Jackson and numerous elected officials were present. Television personalities and even Don King showed up. I discovered that his hair looks the same in person, as it does on television. Nonetheless, it was a very hot July morning and most of us had stood in line at the East Entrance for a half hour. By the time we entered the South Lawn, we were all drenched with perspiration and everyone wanted a seat.
I happened to have been issued a blue ticket, which meant that I would have to stand outside the ropes surrounding those seated on lawn chairs. The President eventually made his entrance and gave a standard speech. Read more...
